Basic Information:This medicine is used to treat conditions in which the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism).
Information:How It Works
Propylthiouracil interferes with the body's ability to use iodine in the manufacture of thyroid hormone.
Range and Frequency
Adults: To start, 300 to 900 mg a day, with doses every 8 hours. Maximum dose: 1,200 mg a day. Usual maintenance dose is 50 to 600 mg a day. Children ages 6 to 10: To start, 50 to 150 mg a day in 3 doses. The dose can be adjusted later. Children ages 10 and older: 50 to 300 mg per day, in 3 doses. To treat a thyroid crisis: 400 mg or more (up to 900 mg a day) for the first day, reduced gradually over subsequent days.
