Basic Information:Decreases inflammation to areas of the body by reducing swelling, redness, itching and allergic reactions mainly by stabilizing leukocyte lysosomal membranes. It has a greater anit-inflammatory potency than prednisolone and even less tendency than prednisolone to induce sodium and water retention.
Information:Indications
Severe inflammation, shock, other serious tramas or illnesses such as cancer is used when oral therapy is not an option.
Contraindications
Use during pregnancy only if the benefits outweigh risks.
Warnings
Corticosteroids may mask some signs of infection and may also cause infection. Average to large doses of cortisone can cause increased blood pressure, salt and water retention and hypokalemia.
Availability
Adults 10-40 mg depending on the disease, then adjust dose due to response given IM or IV. Should be given slowly over a few minutes (approx. 3-5 min.)
Adult: 30 mg/kg infused IV over 10-20 minutes may be repeated q 4-6 hours for 2-3 days only. Pediatric: Not less than 0.5 mg/kg/day.
